RWI Lessons

The teaching of Phonics at Gainsborough

At Gainsborough pupils learn to read and write effectively and quickly using the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme. The programme is for pupils in Year R to Year 2 who are learning to read and write. The school’s Reading Leader oversees the running of this programme to ensure that our children develop a love of reading and become confident fluent readers as quickly as possible.

In Read Write Inc. Phonics pupils:

- Decode letter-sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic   knowledge and skills

-Read common exception words on sight

-Understand what they read

-Read aloud with fluency and expression

-Spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words

-Acquire good handwriting.

Beginning in Nursery, children are introduced to sounds in the environment, oral blending games and visually recognising each letter’s supporting picture. From Reception to Year 2, children are grouped according to their phonic knowledge for a daily reading session with phonics providing the structure for early reading development.  All children are assessed half-termly and groups are reviewed in response to these assessments and the pupils’ needs. We aim for the majority of children to be secure with all most aspects of the RWI programme by the end of Year 1, so they can move onto reading lessons that further develop their comprehension skills and confident fluent reading in Year 2.

We strive for our pupils to fully complete the RWI phonics programme as quickly as possible. The sooner they complete it, the sooner they will be able to choose books to read at their own interest and comprehension level and become lifelong readers.
